Student Action has a new website!

But this is far more than a lick of paint: all of our projects are now run by a custom made Volunteer Management System, which allows project managers and volunteers access to all the information they need wherever they are, as well as online sign up and an entirely paperless operation.

Our dedicated team is also available to provide graphics design and online solutions for your organisation. For business enquiries please contact action@umsu.manchester.ac.uk.

Circus Action

Fridays 4pm to 6pm

This project aims to give kids who may not be able to afford regular after-school activities the opportunity to participate in circus training. It will teach circus as a performing art form, rather than purely circus skills, thereby encouraging the children's creativity and enabling them to express themselves through circus. It can give the kids skills for the future, such as self-confidence from performing in front of an audience, developing trust and working together as a team.

Our project manager is Helen Fox.

Sports and Culture United
Olympic Event
28th March 2012
Be part of London 2012!

London 2012 isn’t just about London. Across the UK communities are using the Olympics as a platform for projects and activities inspired by the Games.

The University of Manchester is joining in. In March 2012 almost 400 school children will descend on the Armitage Centre to take part in a day-long festival celebrating culture and sport. The event is a joint project between the International Society, the Manchester Leadership Programme, Sports Volunteers, Student Action and Student Recruitment & Widening Participation.

On the day participants will travel through 5 zones of activities, one for each of the Olympic rings. We are currently looking for student volunteers to help in two of the zones: the Culture Zone and the Food and Nutrition Zone.

Student volunteers will need to work in groups of two or three to plan and run an activity related to the theme of the zone, suitable for small groups of children aged 9-11 to participate in on a rolling basis. Activities shouldn’t take the children longer than about 10 minutes maximum to complete. Culture activities could be a national craft or a game exploring a particular culture. It may be related to costume, a tradition, a historical site, in fact anything related to different cultures. For the Food and Nutrition zone we are looking for activities exploring national dishes and Healthy options. This could involve making food or games around food but doesn’t have to necessarily involve eating!

Planning will need to be completed in February 2012 and all volunteers will need to be available all day on the day of the event, Wednesday 28th March and part of Tuesday 27th March for set-up. Please note that this day is in the first week of the Easter holidays and so volunteers will need to be able to stay in Manchester for the first few days of the holiday.

Help will be provided in planning suitable activities. This volunteering is especially relevant for students who are able to share first hand experience of different cultures through their planned activities, such as international students. Because volunteers will not have unsupervised access no Criminal Records Bureau check is necessary.

We will also need student volunteers to help with the event management on the day (reception, directing, buddying groups etc.)

If you are interested in finding out more sign up to the briefing session taking place on Wednesday 7th December at 13:00 in the Ground Floor Lecture Theatre, Simon Building, by emailing action@umsu.manchester.ac.uk
