HISTORY OF BRUMANCH

BruManch was a society set up by Sabrina along with the 2005/2006 council in conjunction with a massive influx of Bruneian students into Manchester. The first year of establishment proved to be a success with numerous events and trips held such as, Hari Raya, Chesire Oak Trips, Traffod Trips and so forth.

Backed up by BSU, some of the previous council members and juniors, the society has now gone into it's 2nd year and hopes to continue on strong.

As such, the society is honoured to have the 1st BruManch President say her piece.

"BruManch was established in 2005 when the seniors in Manchester at that time, about 20 of us, decided that the great influx of students would create a great opportunity to finally start a society. We had motivation within ourselves and we had the support of the BSU unit. In the year of 2005 to 2006, BruManch was undoubtedly in its early stages. Although we were enthused with the establishment of BruManch and proud to see it develop, we all knew that it would undoubtedly be up to the support of its would be members that would decide BruManch's fate.

"As I look back to the very first ice breaker session in Armitage where the future members of BruManch first got together to the final meeting where the new committee members were elected and the BruManch Committee 2005 to 2006 stepped down, I remember the support by the members that never quavered. It is not easy to manage a society and it is far more impossible to do it by yourself. As such, there is no doubt in my mind that the success of BruManch has been due to that support its members had given and the help that came unquestioningly.

"I would like to thank all the members of BruManch 2005 - 2006 for believing in me and believing in the AJKT and for putting your confidence with BruManch. If there is one thing to remember about BruManch it is this: BruManch's building blocks has always been the fact that it was established by a group of friends who had faith in one another. Each member had their own individual contribution but each held a vital piece in ensuring BruManch's success. This was true then, and this is true now, and this will be true in the future.

"To the BruManch committee 2006-2007 and its members, I would like to say that it is with great pride that I talk about BruManch and see its success. I cannot be anymore proud of the hardwork you have put into BruManch and the dedication you continue to show."

Your BruManch President 2005-2006,

Brunei

"Malaya was conquered by Japanese in the Second World War and later on by British. Malaya became independant from British in the year of 1957 and in 1961 our first Prime Minister proposed a Malaysian Federation of Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and Singapore. All but Brunei joined the federation in 1963. Later due to economic and political disputes based on racial differences led to Singapore's exit in 1965."

As confusing as it is for everyone but Bruneians, we are not and have not ever been a part of Malaysia. Well, based on what we've been taught from History anyway. Once a mighty country that spans the whole of Borneo, part of what is now Malaysia, to Indonesia, to the Philippines and acknowledged by Ancient China... is now a tiny country sandwhiched between Sarawak and Sabah. *sniff*

Most popularly known for it's once Richest Man in the world, the Sultan, Brunei is also known for it's Oil & Gas Industry, Royal Family and the people's fondnest for vibrant colours and shiny fast cars. *yay* But of course, we are much much more than that.

The acknowledged citizens are Malays and Chinese, with Malay as the mother tongue, English WIDELY spoken around the country (especially among the young generation), Mandarin (Cantonese and Hokkien) and spatterings of Japanese, Korean, Tagalok and Thailand courtesy of the drama series available in many many shops.

Once, there was a time when Bruneians were 100% malays, but now, the blood has been mixed, and what you see now are most malay-chinese, malay-indians, malay-caucasian, malay-arabs and so forth. We're an easy going folk and if you know what to look for, you can tell we're not at all like Malaysians.

Still a developing country, it's not doing so badly for a country that has gained its independence in 1984.
