The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) is one of the leading progressive think-tanks in the UK. For more info, check out their website at http://www.ippr.org.
IPPR@universities involves the formation of partnerships between IPPR and student-led think tank societies. The programme was set up two years ago and is now established at three other universities across the country, Warwick, Sheffield and York. IPPR@Manchester is in the early stages of formation and is set to provide an exciting programme of events and opportunities for the student community at the University of Manchester and beyond. We hope to build a reputation as a high class network, providing opportunities for engaged students to participate in rigorous debates around public policy. IPPR@Manchester will be affiliated to Challenging Orthodoxies Society, but will have a separate identity. The scheme aims to act as a springboard for students who are interested and/or hoping to enter a career in politics, research and policymaking. Each year, the programme will focus on an over-arching theme, this year the theme will be ‘Global Politics and the Environment’. Therefore, this topic seeks to engage students and researchers with a variety of interests including sustainability, global economy, political science, community organising, behavioural change and many more. The IPPR@Manchester 2011/12 programme is set to include the following;
- A series of ‘Café Politique’ events - public meetings designed to engage the wider student body and local community in debate and discussion around public policy. A range of formats will be used including individual guest speakers and panel discussions.
- A launch event including a number of high class speakers and policy /research skills workshops.
- Involvement in the production and opportunity to submit and publish an article in the IPPR@Universities highly prestigious policy journal – Metis
- A limited number of paid internship and work experience opportunities at IPPR in their offices in London or Newcastle
