Bag Packing Sat 21st Nov 2009 at 9:00 Tescon Altrincham This will be our second bag pack of the year to help raise money for the Chernobyl Children's Project, we are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to come along and help us for a couple of hours at The Altrincham Tesco store.

Lifts can be provided for any willing volunteers and any hours done can count towards the Manchester Leadership programme

Bag Packing will take place between 9am and 4pm on Saturday and Sunday and we would really appreciate any time you can give up to help this great cause.

Hiking in Snowdonia Sunday 22/11! www.umhc.org.uk Sun 22nd Nov 2009 at 8:30 The University of Manchester Hiking Club (UMHC) is going to Rhyd Ddu in Snowdonia this Sunday the 22nd of November. There is an opportunity for a wide range hikes, so you will be catered for whatever your fitness or state of hangover.

Remember it's wintery now so you WILL need:

Walking BOOTS (not hiking shoes)
A waterproof coat and trousers.
Warm clothes.
Warm spare clothes.
Hat and Gloves.
A torch (preferably headtorch).
Warming snacks.
Spare food.

UMHC runs hikes and socials every week, for more info and to sign up for our mailing list to hear about future hikes and socials please see our website: www.umhc.org.uk.

This week's trip and all other coach trips cost £10 for members and £14 for non-members (membership is only £10).

UMHC runs at least 4 walks per trip for a range of abilities, but hiking boots, waterproofs and warm clothes are essential, please see equipment section of the website: http://umhc.org.uk/?p=safety

If you would like to come hiking this weekend, become a member or just chat to someone about the hikes please come to our regular sign up running throughout reading week:

Tues and Thurs 12.30-13.30 _at_ Harry's Bar, Barnes Wallis Building, North Campus.

Open Media and the Young Greens present a free showing of 'Who Killed the Electric Car?'

A 2006 documentary film that explores the creation, limited commercialization, and subsequent destruction of the battery electric vehicle in the United States, specifically the General Motors EV1 of the 1990s. The film explores the roles of automobile manufacturers, the oil industry, the US government, the Californian government, batteries, hydrogen vehicles, and consumers in limiting the development and adoption of this technology.

RADIATION Tue 24th Nov 2009 at 18:00 Roscoe Theatre B Chernobyl Children's Project is hosting a lecture all about RADIATION, its biological effects, and the use of radiation in modern Medicine.

The Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster happened in April 1986 and since the disaster high numbers of children continue to be born with life limiting disabilities and many with various forms of cancer.

Professor Catherine West will examine the biological mechanisms by which radiation can induce cancer and other diseases and look at how we can utilise radiation as both a diagnostic tool and in the treatment of cancer.

Footholds To The Future In Anthropology Wed 25th Nov 2009 at 14:00 University Place. Room 4.205 FOOTHOLDS TO THE FUTURE is a student led conference that aims to create dialogue between lecturers and students on the comtemporary concerns of anthropology. The debate will be split into three sessions:

- The future of Anthropology: where is anthropology heading now and where should it be going in the future? Does it even have a future?

- Beyond the page: how does anthropology situate itself in the wider world? Raising questions about applied anthropology, how can our discipline be useful to the people it attempts to understand? Or should it purely confine itself to academia?

- Beyond the degree: practical career advice, discussing the merits and potential that an anthropology degree offers and how you can use you anthropological background. Postgraduate options will also be discussed.

Three chosen lectures will present their views on each topic for 5 minutes each. Then discussion is open to the floor, so its up to you to discuss, listen, ask and argue as you wish!

Topic 1: Penny Harvey, Michelle Obeid, Stuart Muir
Topic 2: Tony Simpson, Petra, John Gledhill
Topic 3: Andrew Irving, Alex, Sarah Green

Students Sustainability Forum Thu 3rd Dec 2009 at 17:00 Student Union - MR1 (top floor) he SSF is exists as a forum for all staff and students to express their ideas and concerns regarding environmental issues on campus.

It acts as an intermediary body between students and the complex University management structure, with some of its members sitting on University boards.

If you want better recycling in halls, or better bike parking facilities, or have any ideas at all - then feel free to bring them to the Forum.

Christmas Cosplay Party Fri 11th Dec 2009 at 21:00 Club Phoenix M13 9RN
It's Cosplay Time!! This year we are going to have two cosplay parties, first being just before Christmas break. It'll be in Club Phoenix which is by the University Precinct/Blackwells (above The Phoenix pub) for those who don't know from 9pm - 2am

It'll be a fun night of Japanese music (i'm sure a requests thread will go up so you can request in advance) and lots of dancing and having fun.

If you're in cosplay (which i hope most people will be) then it'll be £1 entry
No cosplay but with MUJS card then entry is £2
No cosplay or MUJS card then entry is £4

There will be prizes for best cosplay etc. so make sure to come along and tell all your friends ^_^
