Chittenden & Perren win EVO Cup Thursday, 14 June 2007

Yesterday at Rye House, Hertfordshire, the UMMS completed their final year event - the EVO Karting Cup.

In sweltering heat, twenty society members took to the track for over an hour of hard fought racing. Also present were UMMS ambassadors Tiff Chittenden and Riki Christodoulou, taking time out of their busy schedules to join in the fun.

As expected, Riki and Tiff filled out the front row and were closely followed by Marc Mercer and Chris Gornall. As the flag fell, Tiff took the lead followed by Adam Christodoulou. Unfortunately on lap 3 after recovering from a poor start, Riki collided with his cousin, resulting in a spin down the field. This let Rick Osborn move into 2nd place and shadow Tiff for the next 8 laps with Adam Christodoulou in close company. As the race wore on, Osborn retired after a collision with Neil Turner leaving Tiff to extend her lead to finish three seconds ahead of Adam Christoudolou. Marc Mercer claimed 3rd spot, with Riki Christodoulou claiming fastest lap on the way back to a spirited 5th place.

The top 3 from the UMMS itself were Ed Perren, Tarasch Rawjee and Julian Norman.

A full race report with full photo and video footage of the event will be available in due course.

Jarvis Update Sunday, 10 June 2007

Having qualified 2nd for both of his races, Jarvis came home in 2nd and 5th places. He now trails 1st place in the championship by just a single point and will be looking to grab top spot on July 7th/8th at the world famous Suzuka circuit.

Northern Universities Championship

Manchester took three teams to the one off Northern Universities Championship 2 hour enduro at Teeside last Wednesday. Having placed ourselves 2nd on the grid out of 27, Manchester A took the lead of the race for the first hour, however at half distance a novice driver from another University spun off and then skidded back onto the track. Unfortunately, they did so into the path of ex-JICA star Matt Roberts, resulting in the Manchester A kart being damaged beyond repair. Fortunately Matt was not seriously injured, however our race was over and we were left to reflect on what might have been. Manchester B and C also drove solid and consistent races, seeing them remain on the fringes of the top 10 throughout.

Newest member of the society, Oliver Jarvis, has won his first ever All-Japan F3 race at Mount Fuji this weekend. After starting 2nd on the grid in race one, Jarvis moved swiftly into 1st place, a position he would hold to the chequered flag. Crossing the line four seconds ahead of his closest rival, Jarvis confirmed his intentions for the 2007 season by also setting the fastest lap of the race. In race 2, he once again finished on the podium by taking 3rd place. This promising start to the season means the Cambridge born racer enters round two at Suzuka full of confidence. You'll be able to read about his results first at the UMMS.

In other news, society member Richard Johal plans to participate in the 2007 Mongol Rally. Johal will be racing a Suzuki SJ (pictured above) across numerous countries in pursuit of the final destination of Ulan-Bator, Mongolia. You can read more about this exciting adventure at his website.

UMMS welcomes Oliver Jarvis Wednesday, 28 March 2007

L: Oliver with the 2007 A1GP Mexico winners trophy R: Oliver in A1GP (C) Jakob Ebrey

The UMMS is absolutely delighted to announce a partnership with one of Britain's most talented and up and coming racers, Oliver Jarvis. Oliver will join the society in an Ambassador capacity and will act as a lead figurehead of the society.

"I am very pleased to be associated with the University of Manchester Motorsport Society and I would like to thank the Committee for inviting me to take up this role.

2007 is going to be an exciting year for me in Japan driving for TOM’S Toyota in the All Japan F3 Championship and I am relishing the new challenges that lay ahead, news of which I will be sharing with UMMS members throughout the season. Adrian Sutil drove for TOM’S Toyota last year and won the Championship. This year, he is driving for Spyker in Formula One so I will be doing my best to repeat this success for the team!

Although I am based in Japan for most of this year, I will be following the activities of UMMS with genuine interest. It seems that you have some great events lined up and I wish you all the best.

Thanks for all your support.

Oliver Jarvis"
