Domains and Subdomains
There are two domain choices for hosting your website on our server:
- www.umu.man.ac.uk/yoursocietyusername - this is the default
- www.yoursociety.org.uk, .com etc
You need to register and pay for domains such as those in point two above, but we can arrange for DNS, web and mail hosting.
If you want to register an external domain contact root@umu.man.ac.uk prior to registration of the domain - there are details that you will need when registering your domain, and using the right details initially saves changing them later.
Mail
If you have your own domain, you get to control the addresses within that domain. If you don't specify anything else, all mail to your domain goes to your @umu.man.ac.uk address. If you want it to go elsewhere, you need to create a directory called
mail_vut in your home directory. In there, you create a file for each address. The name of the file should be the bit before the @ sign (e.g. for president@mydomain.net you would create a file called president). Mail sent to that address gets sent on to every address in that file (one email address per line, and as many as you want). One you have created the directory, contact root@umu.man.ac.uk and we will give you further details.
